Leadership coaching is an integral part of growing your bench because it creates a stronger team, better succession planning, and cultural continuity. According to the 2009 Filene report, “Attributes and Skills of Highly Effective Credit Union Managers,” leadership issues are the most important professional consideration for young credit union employees. Two out of three (63%) said their relationship with their direct supervisor was extremely important and 34% said it was important. This measure ranked much higher in importance than cash compensation or other benefits. Middle managers, as the day-to-day supervisors of entry-level employees, are the linchpins of the credit union’s retention and talent management success. Leading people is a skill that needs to be taught and practiced.
