The purpose of the study reported here is to provide information on actual credit union practices determining who will be directors. In addition, the research reports opinions of CEOs and board chairs on how well these practices work. These results provide a way for all credit unions to evaluate their practices compared to a representative sample of all credit unions.
The board of directors plays a key role in the success of a credit union. The board selects the CEO, manages the relationship with the CEO, and has ultimate authority over the credit union. Therefore the manner in which the board is developed can make a substantial difference in the performance of the credit union. Board development has several dimensions. The very first dimension is how the directors themselves come to sit on the board.

I work as an assistant manager in The Lough Credit Union, Cork, Ireland and I am currently studying for a Masters in co-operataive and Social Enterprise, through the Centre for Co-oeprative Studies in University College, Cork.
I am currently working on my thesis and my subject is Succession Planning for Boards of Directors in Credit Unions.
I would appreciate if you could let me know if student access to your publications is available. I have noted one particular publication, Research and Selection Practices at Credit Union Boards I would like to read as part of my research.
I would be very grateful for any assistance you might offer.
Yours Faithfully

I too am considering a doctoral dissertation on board succession and/or nominating committee role of credit unions in the Maryland DC Credit Union Association. Perhaps we can collaborate after our studies and embark on a nationwide study in 2008.
