In Credit Unions as Employers of Choice for the New MBA: A Report on the Filene Summer Fellowships, Filene’s Research Director Ben Rogers tracks the activities, challenges, and successes of Filene’s endeavor to place top MBA candidates at credit unions across the country. This is a primer for those that want to make themselves a destination for talented, up-and-coming business minds.
Fostering talent in credit unions is a core priority of the Filene Research Institute and is behind well-known efforts like i3, “radical sabbaticals,” PhD funding, and the 30 Under 30 group. Add to that list the institute’s newest talent project: Filene Summer Fellowships.
For the summers of 2008 and 2009, Filene selectively placed summer fellows, most of them MBA candidates, at credit unions across the country. This report tracks the activities, challenges, and successes of the fellows and the credit unions that hosted them. While acknowledging the hurdles credit unions have to clear, it also provides a primer for those that want to make themselves a destination of choice for talented, up-and-coming business minds. Finally, the report outlines four credit union innovation ideas from this summer’s MBA fellows.

Interestingly, we have expanded our collaboration with the University of Windsor Business School ( Windsor, Ontario, Canada). We have been approached to collaborate for a 1 year period with a 3 Member team of MBA students to undertake 3 specific projects as part of their education.
Could be a linkage here for Filene
We start the process shortly.

I recommend Filene investigate collaboration with the students involved in the Master of Management in Co-operatives and Credit Unions, St. Mary’s University, Nova Scotia, Canada.
Having recently graduated from the program, I can tell you there is much more to learn from other cooperatives and this program provides the opportunity.
I am happy to provide contacts.
Regards,
Kevin
