Hose should definitely be optional. It looks outdated and unattractive. Valley CU, located in Silicon Valley, just updated their dresscode so that employees don’t have to wear it if their skirt is at least knee length–a much needed change! It’s possible to look professional without hose. I am a member of Gen Y, so I guess that accounts for my point of view.

Being a member of GenX….I agree with Laura (GenY) I dress professionally and I do not think the lack of nylons should be an issue. Although due to our outdated dress code, I continue to wear them as it is required.

Companies still manufacture hosiery for women? I thought that piece of fashion left when women stopped wearing shoulder-padded blazers?
One thing I will say about the story is that the CU manager’s change in mindset provides a lot of hope for other areas in our industry, especially considering he had worked there for three decades and had been used to the same standard for so long.
If one luncheon on dressing professionally can change the mind of an incumbent, think about how upper management might warm to the ideas behind social media and Web 2.0 if only presented the chance to understand them.

Although I am a member of Gen Y, I actually think going “hoseless” does look unprofessional. These days, they make pantyhose that are not only very flattery to a women’s figure, but they are also fairly trendy (with nude fishnets and such). That said, I’m not wearing nylons today, but when going to a business function, I put them on.

Just three weeks ago my company stopped requiring pantyhose. It was quite possibly the highlight of every woman’s week here. Everyone was talking about it and I can’t wait to finally go out and buy some professional dress gauchos—I refused to wear them with pantyhose.
I will say though if you are wearing a shorter skirt/business suit I will agree that wearing pantyhose would be the professional thing to do but I’d rather it be my choice than a requirement.
