MatriMoney®

A Credit Union Registry for Love and Marriage

The wedding registry market continues to grow each year with nearly $18 billion spent on wedding gifts in the United States through these various registries. Research has indicated that cash gifts are the most desired gifts by couples. There remains, however, stigma in asking for cash from friends and relatives.

The MatriMoney account provides a more elegant way for engaged couples to request cash consistent with wedding registries at retail stores. Members with upcoming weddings open an account and provide their guests with information on how to deposit cash gifts directly at the credit union. The transaction is supported by announcement cards and a deposit roster to keep track of givers and gifts.

An international technology company is expanding the concept as a gift registry for multiple occasions. The product that will be available for all credit unions and their members will make opening an account and gift giving a simple click process. Social media (sharing honeymoon locations, etc.) will also be a key feature, given the social nature that drives events around gift giving. Check back in the spring of 2009 for developments.

  1. I have read the blueprints and business plan. How does it work as far as purchasing the materials and is there a step by step guide for getting started?

  2. I forgot to mention that I am talking about the MatriMoney Wedding Registry.

  3. I’d also like to know what type of software is being used to track the gifts and required thank yous.

If you let us know your processor, we can probably connect you with resources. There are a lot of enhancements to this idea in the works right now. Feel free to email me directly at karenh@filene.org.

How do I get my credit union this information to offer this service?

There are two ways to get your credit union to offer MatriMoney. One is to send their name and location to Filene, and we will follow up. You can post the information here or email to innovation@filene.org.

The other is to use your credit union’s feedback mechanism to request that they offer MatriMoney. They probably have a Contact Us form on their Web site to submit. Or you could speak with your branch manager and ask if they have a process for developing new types of accounts, and refer them to this Web site for details. We would be happy to help them get started.
