Through independent research and innovation, the Filene Research Institute explores issues vital to the future of credit unions and consumer finance.

Filene's Ideas Grow Here

  1. Montreal Part Deux

The skies have cleared in Montreal, perhaps to mirror the bright ideas being shared by the inspiring talent involved with Filene’s big.bright.minds gathering!

Folks were raring to go on day two and were rewarded with a congenial and inspired presentation from Matt Fullbrook (Rotman School of Management, Univeristyof Toronto) who discussed his latest research idea: Linking Governance and Performance. Mr. Fullbrook had the crowd hooked on his ideas about creating a sleeker, more efficient board of directors! Click here to download his presentation.

Next up was a special guest from the world of innovation: Daniel Boyer, Head of Service, Service Evolution & Internet Operations Solution, Virtual Access and Network Performance Direction at Desjardins, Canada. Mr. Boyer shared how Desjardins handles IT innovation and gave tips to the audience on how to keep the innovative spirit alive in their employees. Click here for details on Mr. Boyer’s presentation.

Eyes opened wide when Beth Viner from IDEO took the stage. IDEO is all about Design Thinking. IDEO’s focus lies at the intersection of insight and inspiration, and is informed by business, technology, and culture. Viner gave the attendees ideas on how everyone can take small steps to apply Design Thinking at their credit union. Because of the large size of Viner’s presentation, we had create two files for download. Click here for part 1 and click here for part 2.

Finally, the crowd was amused, inspired, and touched by a surprise presentation by Montreal’s Bernard Lachance. Lachance is a successful singer who made his name by renting theatres in Canada and the U.S. and selling tickets on the street (convincing people one by one by having them hear his music and choosing their seating from the chart on his t-shirt). Lachance recently appeared on Oprah Winfrey after an enthusiastic invitation to her via YouTube.

With the official adjournment of the meeting, it was then time for the i3 members to begin their next round of ideation with a dynamic field experience, faciliated by Filene’s Innovator in Residence, Maya Bourdeau. They newly-announced seven teams were dispatched to locations throughout Montreal to look at the consumer experience through various lenses, including Trust, Surprise, and Access. Exploring the subway system, Old Montreal, and the St.-Denis Designer Shops were some of the highlights. They ended the exercise with a brainstorming and multi-voting session designed to jumpstart their creative process.

All too soon we bid au revoir to Montreal and our gracious hosts.
