  1. Idea Idol – The Next Big Innovation

We are adding a twist to seeking marketplace feedback.

Get ready for Idea Idol for credit unions. Credit unions’ think and do tank, which helped bring to life dozens of breakthrough innovations like Prize-linked Savings, Savings Revolution, and Debt in Focus, is ready to launch its next big idea. The Filene Research Institute put its portfolio of 76 i3 innovation program ideas through a rigorous set of evaluations and determined four were ready for further study and implementation.

The next challenge: Gather marketplace feedback—reality TV style.

On September 14 at 2:00 PM EDT, the institute will host its first ever Idea Idol to help decide which innovation will take the big stage. These are Kelly Clarkson and Carrie Underwood quality ideas (the William Hung and General Larry Platt ideas still need some more rehearsal).

Click here to register for the Filene Research Institute’s Idea Idol before September 13th.

The four ideas seeking idol status include:

    • Flex. One – a first mortgage combined into a Home Equity Line of Credit (HELOC) with all the capabilities of a checking account.
    • Heartfelt Hands – uses the “angel tree” concept of recognizing an emergency financial need and matching that financial need with members who are willing to help.
    • HomeTrak – a program that allows homeowners to keep track of the remaining life and replacement cost of all appliances, mechanicals, and big-ticket items in their homes.
    • The Signal – a website that helps consumers navigate through the questions and complexities of disability benefits and asset building.

“Credit unions have always been intimately involved with the selection of every idea we end up putting into our lab,” says Denise Gabel, Filene Research Institute’s Chief Innovation Officer. “We’ve already played Paula and Simon. With four ideas this close together in quality and potential, we wanted to use a new way to add the voice of our marketplace.”

The process is simple. Representatives from the Filene Research Institute’s i3 innovation program will present product/service ideas in concise, three-minute pitches, followed by a brief question and answer period. The audience will be asked to provide feedback and vote for their favorite idea based on the following criteria:
    • Positive impact on consumers
    • Positive impact on credit unions
    • Their willingness to pilot and implement
