“We do not inherit the earth from our ancestors, we borrow it from our children.” – Native American Proverb

The idea of Earth Day came to life as Gaylord Nelson, then US Senator from Wisconsin, witnessed the massive oil spill of Santa Barbara, CA in 1969. The anti-war movement further inspired Gaylord to utilize the energy of the public to push environmental protection into the political agenda. Consequently, on the 22nd of April, millions of Americans took to the streets and parks to demonstrate for a healthy, sustainable environment. Suddenly, groups that had been fighting against oil spills, toxic dumps, pesticides, extinction and other causes realized a common bond. Now Americans reaffirm their commitment to the planet each April 22nd.

Earth Day began as a grass roots movement of people with a common bond. Today it is estimated that over a billion people will participate in the event, making it the largest civic observance in the world.

This Earth Day, show your members how they can make wise green choices and take advantage of money-saving, eco-friendly options offered by your credit union. One easy way is through an i3 innovation called, “The Leap”. The Leap is an easy to implement web-based tool that can help enhance your own green based marketing efforts.
